[dropcap]T[/dropcap]he Malta Planning Authority revealed the latest architectural plans for a new 38-storey tower to be located in the center of Sliema. The tower, which was initially proposed by the Gasan Group in 2007, has recently been approved by the Planning Authority despite concerns from Sliema locals over increased traffic and dust pollution during the four year construction.
“The tower will clog up traffic 24/7 ” complained Bettina Pace, a Sliema local. “Parking is going to be even more of a nightmare.”
The Planning Authority’s controversial approval has also found an unlikely opponent in Archbishop Charles Scicluna.
“Some developers and businessmen have Midas in their mind when they gloat on the high-rise project the Planning Authority has recently approved,” said the Archbishop Scicluna in a recent statement, adding “They lace their pockets with gold and ruin the beauty of our island which is our common heritage.”
Despite the ongoing resistance, the Planning Authority stood by their decision and assured Sliema locals that they have their best interests at heart in a recent press realese.
“A new power is rising. Its victory is at hand. This night the land will be stained with the blood of Rohan.” said chairman Vince Cassar, adding “March to Helm’s Deep. Leave none alive. To war!”
